[00:00:26] - [Speaker 0]
Hi, and welcome to the Middle Aged Dad Record Club. I'm Ash. I'm Matthew. And this is our first official full episode. If you haven't already listened to our teaser, please do so.
[00:00:37] - [Speaker 0]
It gives a bit of an idea about the show, what we're gonna do, what we hope to do, our our dreams, and our thoughts, and our visions of what this masterpiece will be, no doubt. But also give a bit of sense of the vibe of what we're doing. So but what's on the episode today?
[00:00:54] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Today, I'm really looking forward to deep diving into our perfect Radiohead album. So the 12 tracks that we've chosen. And as we sit here today, our Radiohead journey is in the lives is in the hands of my 18 year old daughter who was the only one amongst us who who got a successful registration Absolutely. To the show.
[00:01:20] - [Speaker 0]
So tragedy.
[00:01:21] - [Speaker 1]
We we we head into this with some trepidation that we'll we'll get there, but I think we will. But it's on the whims of an 18 year old's availability to get us tickets.
[00:01:32] - [Speaker 0]
Well, you know, this is the upside of having kids, I suspect. That's right. More chances. This is the only reason. But yeah.
[00:01:40] - [Speaker 0]
And I mean, look, at least they're coming. It's been a long time. So we'll dig into that. We're also gonna do a top five battle on b sides, which I know you love your b sides, so that's gonna be fierce. And a whole bunch of other stuff.
[00:01:54] - [Speaker 0]
But firstly, as part of our regular record club element, we're gonna talk about what's spinning on our decks, what have we been listening to, and also what are we looking forward to coming up. So, Matt, why don't you kick us off? What's been spinning?
[00:02:09] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. So the the thing that really hasn't left my turntable for the last couple of months is an album called Second by a band called Vent four one four. And a brief history of them, they formed in about 1996 in The UK out of the ashes of a of a couple of UK bands, most notably, The Wonder Stuff. Miles Hunt is the lead singer and songwriter in The Wonder Stuff, and he went on to form vent four fourteen soon after the Wonder Stuff split in '94. He shaved his head off, his his head, his hair off, and he got Steve Albanian as you do for seven days and made a really kind of spiky angular, quite punky record that they called vent four one four.
[00:02:58] - [Speaker 1]
The album is fantastic. It wasn't overly commercially successful. It didn't fit with the times in terms of the the Britpop movement. So it it sort of sunk sadly, but not for people like me who have kept the torch alive with Vent four fourteen. And amazingly, they reformed, and they've made the second album, which they've called second.
[00:03:24] - [Speaker 1]
It's it picks up on that three piece sound. It's very bass and drum driven. Morgan Nichols and Pete Howard are the rhythm section. It's just extraordinary. What Miles Hunt brings is just a big loud guitar sound.
[00:03:39] - [Speaker 1]
And pleasingly for me, just the soaring choruses, melodic as hell, just a great album. Three tracks that I can highly recommend is the closer Hail the Empaths, couple of other tracks when time was on outside and hanging out with you. It's just an absolute 10 track banger. So I really, really recommend it. And just a warning for you Ash and anyone who listens to this podcast.
[00:04:09] - [Speaker 1]
A lot of my musical roads lead back to the genius that is Miles Hunt. So you'll have to forgive me for sneaking in Wonder Stuff anecdotes wherever I can.
[00:04:20] - [Speaker 0]
No. That's totally totally expected, and I will reply in kind.
[00:04:24] - [Speaker 1]
Very good. Very good. The vet four one four second. Give it a listen. Cool.
[00:04:30] - [Speaker 0]
Well, for me, I've got two two that I'll quickly mention. One is a really kinda odd one. It's more of a recent release, and this is from the Claypool Lennon delirium. So Les Claypool, bassist of Primus, and Sean Lennon, I guess, more famously known as son of John Lennon, but also
[00:04:52] - [Speaker 1]
And Yoker.
[00:04:53] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And and Yoker. But also done a ton of music as well. So they've done a few albums, but this new one is called the great parrot ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy, which is an amazing title. But it's it's the way I would describe it is magical mystery tour era Beatles, melodies, and vocals with Primus.
[00:05:18] - [Speaker 0]
And, like, early Primus too. So bassy as well. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
[00:05:22] - [Speaker 0]
But but it's I mean, so I've got a mate who hates Primus, and he didn't wanna listen to it. I was like, no. No. Give it a listen because it it balances it out. I feel the vibe I get is, like, Sean Lennon is is driving the songs and the and the and the melodies and the vocals, and Les is just, like, playing with him.
[00:05:41] - [Speaker 0]
It doesn't feel like either of them is sort of putting all the, you know, the foot down on it. Anyway, it is a delightful album. Again so the it's a kind of a concept album. So it's all about this, you know, AI and how that's changing the world and technology and the importance of empathy and love and human in the machine and all that kind of cool stuff. Yeah.
[00:06:06] - [Speaker 0]
So I love it. I bought the vinyl and it's got a comic that they've done on it, which is anyway, it's it's so cool.
[00:06:13] - [Speaker 1]
I know.
[00:06:13] - [Speaker 0]
So tracks, I would say, before investing in it, if you wanna get a sense of it, I would say WAP, What a Predicament. That's the first track I'd listen to. If you like that, then I'd try Meat Machines. And then The Golden Egg of Empathy, which I think they've released as a single, definitely has a video clip, which is amazing, and you gotta watch
[00:06:36] - [Speaker 1]
that. Psychedelic.
[00:06:37] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Real psychedelic, but but that one is very primacy. So if you like primacy, go straight to that one. If you sort of wanna work your way in, I'd say try the others. Yeah.
[00:06:46] - [Speaker 0]
Okay. Something unique I really enjoyed, it's a bit of fun. It came out in May, so it's not necessarily new release. One that came out in July I think it was July this year. It was July last year.
[00:07:01] - [Speaker 0]
Sorry. So this is even less of a new release, but I wanna give it a shout out because I just haven't been able to stop playing it. And I've mentioned this to you many times, and it's a Melbourne trio, a band called Folk Bitch Trio, and their debut, another great great title. And their albums now would be a good time. It, like, just really it's won a bunch of awards.
[00:07:26] - [Speaker 0]
It's it's it's really great Australian music, all female leads, which is what you wanna see, and just really good music. The one that got me into it, which wasn't their lead single, was the track, The Actor. And it's just, I don't know, just haunting. Just, you know, those songs that just, for some reason, you don't know why Yeah. They just hook you?
[00:07:46] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Yeah. That was that one. And I really love That's All She Wrote. The single Cathode Ray is really good.
[00:07:52] - [Speaker 0]
Moth song is really good. Like, I kind of I like the whole I like the whole album. I find it a really easy listen. I think I sort of said it to you yesterday or whenever it was like Mazzy Star. Yeah.
[00:08:05] - [Speaker 0]
I was listening to it on the way home and I
[00:08:07] - [Speaker 1]
was It's that sort of dreamy
[00:08:08] - [Speaker 0]
sound, isn't it? It it it is, but it isn't. Like, it's I don't know. It's anyway. Yeah.
[00:08:13] - [Speaker 0]
Really like it. It's something very different, not something I normally listen to. So I've enjoyed that. But, yeah, that's the Oh, this. That's the two things that have been spinning.
[00:08:24] - [Speaker 1]
I will give them both listen and report back. Yeah. Absolutely. Particularly interested in the Sean Lennon one. Mhmm.
[00:08:30] - [Speaker 1]
Again, you know, anything Beatles related is gonna come up for me as well. So
[00:08:35] - [Speaker 0]
Well, that's what got me. Yeah. So I've always loved Primus. One They're of my favorite nineties bands, but when I saw Sean Lennon, like, honestly, I hadn't seen this Yeah. Combo before.
[00:08:46] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And they've done a whole bunch of albums together.
[00:08:48] - [Speaker 1]
So for me, I've I've Primus, you know, and I'm I'm sure I could be proven wrong here, but they just didn't grab me. Oh, really? Interesting. Yeah. And even though I was saying with vent four one four that, you know, that the bass driven, it's probably not something I would say in terms of most of the other music I I really enjoy.
[00:09:10] - [Speaker 1]
And I think that's probably what put me off bands like Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Mhmm. It is is too much noodling on the bass.
[00:09:20] - [Speaker 0]
Oh, well. Yeah. Hold that thought for when we get to our top five battle because you might might see a return on that one. But but, yeah, I think it's fair. Like like I said, one of my mates, he he loves music and he hates primers.
[00:09:34] - [Speaker 0]
And I think it's an acquired taste, but
[00:09:36] - [Speaker 1]
They were polarizing.
[00:09:37] - [Speaker 0]
They were very polarizing.
[00:09:39] - [Speaker 1]
But I
[00:09:39] - [Speaker 0]
just love them because
[00:09:39] - [Speaker 1]
they're weird. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, good stuff.
[00:09:42] - [Speaker 0]
Alright. Well, now we'll move on to new and upcoming. So what are you looking forward to? What's what's another release that's coming out soon?
[00:09:54] - [Speaker 1]
Two things that I have coming in the post soon. I think they're both being released actually towards the end of September. So there's actually a link between the two of them as well. So the first is a is a is a great reissue of the Elastica debut. So that's getting a nice reissue.
[00:10:18] - [Speaker 1]
I think it's coming with a load of the b sides from their debut album as well. So I'm looking forward to that. I've managed to pick up the limited edition as well that comes with a t shirt and a a and a limited seven inch as well. So I love that album Mhmm. From '95.
[00:10:34] - [Speaker 1]
It's just, you know, thirty odd minutes of back to back, little punky tunes and, yeah, Elastica. I'll probably touch upon them, in in in later episodes, but really looking forward to that. And then the link, there is is the the next thing I'm looking forward to is, the thirtieth anniversary reissue of Coming Up by Suede
[00:10:57] - [Speaker 0]
Oh.
[00:10:57] - [Speaker 1]
Which is an absolute seminal mid nineties album. And it's it's it's had the reissue treatment a few times, but this reissue that I'm getting is a Steve Wilson remixed 5.1 surround sound Dolby Atmos type reissue, remaster, with reimagined artwork as well. So it's gonna be a different spin on a classic album. And whilst I love the album and love every song on it, one thing I would say is I've always felt it was a little bit tinny, a little bit the production was a little bit tinny to my ears. And, so really looking forward to a bit of a reimagine of that.
[00:11:38] - [Speaker 1]
But Suede, absolute classic and coming up was their third album. It really hit hard in the mid nineties for me, and it was, you know, it was Britpop, but wasn't at the same time. And Brett Anderson and Suede, you know, they've gone on to have this fantastic second act as well. Great band. So I'm looking forward to those two.
[00:12:00] - [Speaker 1]
And hopefully, they're winging their way to me by late September. Same. Postage gods willing.
[00:12:07] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. I know. You always worry about that. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:12:10] - [Speaker 0]
So I've got one that I'm really looking forward to and one that's, again, kinda like a new not not necessarily new music, but a new record for me. So the first is and it's released we're recording this what is it? September 12. So it's next week. And that is Beck's new album, new material called Ride Lonesome.
[00:12:34] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. So that comes out, I think, on the eighteenth. And having listened to the, like, the lead single and a couple of the other things that he's released, I feel like this is SeaChange two point o. Nice. And SeaChange for me is like a seminal album.
[00:12:48] - [Speaker 0]
Like, it is the ultimate sad dad music. It, you know, obviously came at a really sad time in his life, you know, with breakdown relationship, but those songs are phenomenal. Like, Beck's such an odd artist in the sense that it's, like, so varied in in kind of what he's done from, you know, kind of rap and and and a lot of loops and everything else and kind of quirky stuff into, like but when SeaChange came out, I remember I was like, oh, yeah. It's another Beck album. Cool.
[00:13:14] - [Speaker 0]
And then I had to listen to it. I was like, oh my god. What's happened? And so I think it's a bit of a return to that. Same producer I'm looking forward to.
[00:13:24] - [Speaker 0]
The lead single is fantastic. So I'm gonna absolutely consume that, and maybe next or a future thing, I'll do a bit of a review of it. The second one, again, is kinda like you. Obviously, we are record nerds, but winging its way with the t shirt and Yep. Decemberists Oh, nice.
[00:13:44] - [Speaker 0]
Have a new live album. So it's called Live Home Library volume two, and this is from recordings they did in 2017. So I've I've always loved the Decemberists, but having a look at this list, it's it's a really cracking cracking list. You'll heave you'll be hearing a
[00:14:06] - [Speaker 1]
lot more from me about Deaths Ambarists. I gotta say, despite our listeners, I'm looking forward to hearing a bit more about them as well from you. I think one of the themes that will pick up in this podcast is I'm certainly a lot more UK leaning. But, you know, there's there's some significant cracks in my UK leanings that allow some some American stuff to seep in REM in particular. But Decemberists have been one that I've been needing and thinking I need to do a deep dive on.
[00:14:43] - [Speaker 1]
Make You Better, that song. That it it's up there. It's up there in my top 20 or 30. And I've sort of allowed it just to exist as this one song rather than ex experience a whole catalog.
[00:14:56] - [Speaker 0]
So Look. And some of this stuff is quite varied. Like, I think there's certain like, that's why I lent you the King is Dead LP because I think, for me, that is their best, you know Yeah. Snap to Tale album.
[00:15:09] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Like, for sure.
[00:15:10] - [Speaker 0]
It's so good. But then there's a lot of other stuff. There's like and there's a lot of like, there's this weird sort of song which he wrote as an apology to one of his mates because he lost his bike, and it's called the apology song. And it is so good. And again, that's not even I don't even know if that's on an album.
[00:15:28] - [Speaker 0]
But Yeah. You know, I love the Decembers. Yeah. It's got a great voice. Yeah.
[00:15:33] - [Speaker 0]
They've got they're a great band. It's that kind of interesting it's about as far as country as I'll go.
[00:15:38] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah.
[00:15:38] - [Speaker 0]
But it's got that folky element, but it's also that indie kind of piece. Yeah. And there's like a ten minute epic concept conceptual song called the Mariner's Revenge Song.
[00:15:49] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. I don't know.
[00:15:50] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. It's all about like Yeah. A guy getting revenge on someone and being in a whale. But it's a whole thing.
[00:15:57] - [Speaker 1]
No. I've gotta get into them a bit more and we were talking the other day, Rice. I think, you know, bands like them, Lemonheads, REM, they know when too much country is too much country. They know that line for it to get too twangy and, you know, the banjo comes out.
[00:16:14] - [Speaker 0]
Dad dropped something in my car and my dog got run over. Yeah. Yeah. But I love
[00:16:19] - [Speaker 1]
a I love a bit of folky country influence. Yeah. I do too.
[00:16:23] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Alright. Well, look, that's that's what's new and upcoming. There's actually so much more I wanted to talk about in that space, but I feel like that would just be the whole episode. So we'll hold it over for next episode, but we'll take a quick little guitar pause, and then let's get into radio head, hey.
[00:16:42] - [Speaker 0]
Excellent. Love that. Alright. So now the main course for today. So the idea is if you could pick from any Radiohead song, can you make the best album?
[00:17:08] - [Speaker 0]
Now it's not a greatest hits album, so it's not just the singles nor is it. And, like, full disclosure, obviously, we are both Radiohead nerds, this is the riskiest that we would end up with an obscure thing. So it has to be an album that would actually go out in the world Yeah. And be loved. Not it would be loved by Radiohead fans that has already lived through Radiohead.
[00:17:29] - [Speaker 0]
Right? So it has to have what made us Yeah. Become Radiohead fans. Yeah. Right?
[00:17:34] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:17:35] - [Speaker 0]
The other rules are it's an LP, so it's we're gonna say it's 12 tracks Yep. Just so we have a challenge. Six on each side. So big key factors in our selections are, you know, a big opener, something on the turn, and obviously, big closer.
[00:17:53] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:17:54] - [Speaker 0]
I am so excited to hear what your songs are. I think there'll be some similarities, but I'm interested to see where the differences are, and also what areas of radio are most represented. Anyway, so, Matt, you go and Alright. You go through your list. I'll go through my list, and then let's get into it.
[00:18:13] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah. Look, this is gonna be, I think, across all the podcasts. When you've got bands like Radiohead and whittling it down to a a to a 12. Mhmm.
[00:18:23] - [Speaker 1]
So many considerations. So best attempts here. What I've tried to do, and I think I think you put this into my head, Ash, when we first started talking about it, is give the give the 12 track list some integrity in terms of what the band were thinking as well. So I've tried to take into account what were openers and closers.
[00:18:44] - [Speaker 0]
Oh yeah, yep.
[00:18:45] - [Speaker 1]
Some of the big albums and also like you said you know a couple of tracks that really hit home for me in terms of getting me to where I've got to with Radiohead and probably a natural bias towards peak era Radiohead for me which is always sort of your late teens, early twenties, which I was lucky enough to say was that sort of second, third, fourth album run. Ben's Okay Computer Kid A, which is just their reign for me. But, you know, with a couple of tracks from later era as well. So I'll dig into it. Cool.
[00:19:24] - [Speaker 1]
So on that, I've started with dot dot dot two plus two equals five Oh. As the album opener. Interesting. Now fans of the podcast will also notice we start with a nice bit of guitar plugging in, faffing around. You know, I
[00:19:43] - [Speaker 0]
Don't give away our secrets.
[00:19:45] - [Speaker 1]
I've always loved a couple of things in live concerts. Obviously, all the, you know, all the all the obvious. But the sound of a band plugging in, you know, even swapping guitars between songs and and being such a fan at times that, you know, when different different guitars come on or capos go on different things, you you can kinda sorta see where it might be going. Yeah. Exactly.
[00:20:12] - [Speaker 0]
So Anyway, push through, Matt.
[00:20:14] - [Speaker 1]
Push through. Two plus two equals five for me. Yep. Big opener. Yep.
[00:20:18] - [Speaker 1]
The way that song builds as well, just crazy. So good. So the second track I went for, I was really debating whether I would sort of go out a sequence and have this as the opening track, but I've gone with the national anthem. Yeah. It's a lot, though, to start, I think, with two plus two and then international anthem, but I had to have national anthem there.
[00:20:40] - [Speaker 1]
And, you know, just that that to me, that baseline is just crazy. So good. It's crazy. And if I could give a shout out for another podcast, actually, the Stage Left podcast. Great deep dive with the guys that they got in, in particular, one guy does all the brass.
[00:20:57] - [Speaker 1]
Oh, okay. It's crazy. Yeah. Hours worth and oh, it's really, really good. So, yeah, they're they're they're my two opening tracks.
[00:21:06] - [Speaker 1]
Then I go into Let Down. Nice. I just could not have that there. Now I know everyone sort of, you know, I think that's up there now with one of the most streamed Radiohead songs. Yeah.
[00:21:16] - [Speaker 0]
It's got a revival because of TikTok.
[00:21:18] - [Speaker 1]
Big TikTok. You know? And I know, you know, my my daughter and her friends, you know, Letdown's huge. And I don't know about you, Ash, but, you know, that song I mean, it was a great one from Okay Computer, but it wasn't one that jumped No. No.
[00:21:33] - [Speaker 1]
What a what a what a life that
[00:21:35] - [Speaker 0]
song was so surprised when I saw it going on the tracks. I was like, what's happened? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:21:39] - [Speaker 0]
It's usually some TikTok dance or something like that.
[00:21:41] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. But it's a beautiful song and the time signature and, again, you know,
[00:21:46] - [Speaker 0]
what's sort grow wings kind of like
[00:21:49] - [Speaker 1]
Oh, yeah.
[00:21:49] - [Speaker 0]
Crescendo bits are like powerful. Like, it's him at his best or Yeah.
[00:21:52] - [Speaker 1]
So let down track three.
[00:21:54] - [Speaker 0]
Mhmm.
[00:21:54] - [Speaker 1]
Now, of course, you know, any Radiohead fan is gonna have have to squeeze on a couple of b sides. Yeah. You gotta. Of course. And they're a great b side band.
[00:22:04] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. And they might feature a bit later on. Oh, maybe. Uh-huh. But, you know, a massive song for me, and I've actually got it here, from the Radiohead Australian tour souvenir five track EP that came out in '94.
[00:22:19] - [Speaker 1]
Whilst everyone was, obviously, you know, keen on on on creep, etcetera. There was an acoustic take of killer cars, which I just fell in love with, and there's a couple of other great versions of killer cars. This one isn't on Spotify, the acoustic version on this. So I've gone for one of the b side tracks because it's it appears twice I think on the Street Spirit Yep. CDs, but Killer Cars, brilliant.
[00:22:48] - [Speaker 1]
Absolutely brilliant. Then I've gone into fake plastic plastic trees. Trees. Again, you know, can't not be on there. Then, straight into Karma Police.
[00:23:03] - [Speaker 0]
And that's your turn.
[00:23:04] - [Speaker 1]
That's my turn. Nice. That's my turn.
[00:23:06] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah.
[00:23:07] - [Speaker 1]
You know, fake plastic trees, Karma Police, I'd say most people would say pretty basic choices, but Nah. They can't not be there. Yep. And I've gotta say, if we're lucky enough to get to the live shows, I'm hanging out for Karma Police.
[00:23:21] - [Speaker 0]
That's gonna bring the house down, especially if we get the set that closes.
[00:23:25] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. And do know? Next. Can I just say one little anecdote on Calmer Police to link back to some of my previous previous work? Go for it.
[00:23:34] - [Speaker 1]
You know the Hitler hairdo Oh, yeah. Etcetera. Do you know that's actually aimed at Justine Freshman from Alaska? And apparently, Tom York was sort of being a bit shunned at at a particular sort of music ceremony cool kid type type thing. And, yeah, they were being sneery towards them.
[00:23:57] - [Speaker 1]
And, yeah, just being slammed in Damon and Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So there you go. A little little interesting.
[00:24:05] - [Speaker 1]
It's quite better. So then What's
[00:24:07] - [Speaker 0]
your opener for the second side?
[00:24:09] - [Speaker 1]
Opener for the second side. I thought I'd go with something that sort of, you know, builds and literally fades in. So went black star.
[00:24:18] - [Speaker 0]
Oh, yeah.
[00:24:18] - [Speaker 1]
Which black star has just always been a big track for me from the bends.
[00:24:24] - [Speaker 0]
Me too.
[00:24:24] - [Speaker 1]
Just majestic. Yeah. Absolutely majestic. Then to lift the mood a bit, I've gone for another classic take from from the bends, Just. I mean, you know, some of the guitar, some of the Johnny Greenwood work there.
[00:24:39] - [Speaker 1]
So good.
[00:24:39] - [Speaker 0]
Have you heard there's a version that was on Mark Ron's
[00:24:43] - [Speaker 1]
Yes.
[00:24:43] - [Speaker 0]
I with have. Yeah. It Phantom Planet?
[00:24:46] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Something. Phantom
[00:24:48] - [Speaker 0]
something. Anyway. Yeah.
[00:24:49] - [Speaker 1]
With a brassy Yeah. It's like a brassy one.
[00:24:52] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Really Yeah.
[00:24:53] - [Speaker 1]
No. Yeah. It's a great track. Great track. So just excellent video as well for us to remember back to the day when that appeared on rage.
[00:25:00] - [Speaker 1]
That was always one to, you know, why were they lying down?
[00:25:03] - [Speaker 0]
Is that the one on the pavement?
[00:25:05] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah. And they're all lying down. Oh, why? Oh, you don't wanna know.
[00:25:08] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. And it felt like it felt it felt it felt, you know, deep for its time. Yeah. Then I've gone with there there. Yeah.
[00:25:17] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. So another hail to the thief. I it's just fantastic. And I I actually hope to see that one live.
[00:25:23] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. With the drums. Oh, so good.
[00:25:25] - [Speaker 1]
Going with high and dry there.
[00:25:27] - [Speaker 0]
Mhmm.
[00:25:27] - [Speaker 1]
This is Benz heavy, of course.
[00:25:29] - [Speaker 0]
Yep.
[00:25:29] - [Speaker 1]
But, you know, I've left a couple of tracks off the Benz and maybe okay computer that otherwise, you know, but you you only allowed me 12 tracks.
[00:25:38] - [Speaker 0]
Well, I mean, I would have the entire Benz.
[00:25:39] - [Speaker 1]
Let's call it a day.
[00:25:40] - [Speaker 0]
That's right. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:25:42] - [Speaker 1]
So gone with high and dry. Just just brilliant. You know? Absolutely brilliant. Then my second b side indulgence here, but I don't think it's an indulgence.
[00:25:50] - [Speaker 1]
It's one of the all time greats talk show host. I'm just gonna put
[00:25:56] - [Speaker 0]
it out there. I get I think we might be hearing about that in our top five battle.
[00:26:00] - [Speaker 1]
This is this is one of these tracks, not only should it have been on an album Mhmm. But I'm calling single worthy. Oh, absolutely. You know, just
[00:26:08] - [Speaker 0]
And I guess final anecdote for the history of this podcast, I would say it's the song that created this. Yeah. Because we were going back from a work thing in towards the airport with a couple of colleagues who who were locked in the car while we were sort of discovering that we were both huge Radiohead nerds. And it was when we were getting to the point of talking about b sides Yeah. On Benz.
[00:26:33] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And we're both like, talk shows.
[00:26:35] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Oh.
[00:26:36] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And that's when we're like, we should we should do. We should
[00:26:39] - [Speaker 1]
do this. When you can bond over a b side, you know, you've made it.
[00:26:42] - [Speaker 0]
Right? Yeah. Yeah. And also, genuinely Yeah. A top class.
[00:26:46] - [Speaker 0]
So it's on my list too.
[00:26:48] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Just fantastic. And then keep keeping the integrity of the album closer
[00:26:53] - [Speaker 0]
Mhmm.
[00:26:54] - [Speaker 1]
And a bit more representation for Okay Computer, I've gone to exit music for a film. Perfect. Just, you know, unbelievable. What a close-up. Oh, what a close-up.
[00:27:04] - [Speaker 1]
Right? It leaves I I think the album works. I could come up with version two, three,
[00:27:10] - [Speaker 0]
four, five, five, you could. And I think you could almost do, like, different ones because Yeah. You you know, you you've you've gone heavily with the early Yeah. And you could do a bleep bloop Yeah. Oh, you could.
[00:27:21] - [Speaker 0]
Error. You could do Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. Alright.
[00:27:24] - [Speaker 0]
I'll quickly run through mine because I reckon it's actually interesting. We have a lot of differences. Yeah. But it's interesting because I think there's just sort of I've picked ones probably a little bit later. And perhaps that's because of my ReadyHead journey.
[00:27:38] - [Speaker 0]
So I guess I came into ReadyHead at Okay Computer. I'm a bit younger than you. Yeah. So Benz was before me. Although Benz is probably my favorite.
[00:27:46] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. But Okay Computer was the first one, and it was a parallel to Android that got me there. And I was like, oh my god. Which I think is the bohemian rhapsody of 100%. Our generation.
[00:27:56] - [Speaker 0]
100%. Is the I love it. I love it. Okay. So I will stick
[00:28:02] - [Speaker 1]
to my own rules of moving fast.
[00:28:04] - [Speaker 0]
First side, open up Pyramid Song. Nice. I love it. It's my favorite, so I'm just gonna do it. But also, I think it's a great opener.
[00:28:13] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And you'll be hearing more amnesia because I'm that's probably after Ben's probably my favorite, which is controversial. Really? Oh, yeah. We're not gonna get into hot take territory just yet, but yeah.
[00:28:27] - [Speaker 0]
We should be doing Radiohead
[00:28:28] - [Speaker 1]
hot takes. We'll do that as a separate Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:28:30] - [Speaker 0]
Alright. Second song, there there. Yep. You covered it. Great.
[00:28:33] - [Speaker 0]
And I like the fact that it builds up. So it's like a nice thing to have in the album
[00:28:37] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. At at some top. Hypnotic about the drums. So good.
[00:28:40] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And that was such there's a couple I've only got one more on Hail of the Thief on my list, but it is such a good album. Third, surprise this isn't on yours, Street Spirit Fade album.
[00:28:51] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah. It was on my backups. Yeah.
[00:28:55] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. So that one had to knock out a couple of other Ben songs. Yeah. Like, I'm so jealous I don't have Black Star. Also, Sulk.
[00:29:04] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Just love them all. Yeah. Fourth one, talk show host. Nice.
[00:29:08] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Nice. And then that leads into Sail to the Moon. Oh.
[00:29:12] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Interesting.
[00:29:14] - [Speaker 0]
And that one was purely a pick because this first side is very sort of ethereal. Right? Like, think about Pyramid song into there there into spring street spirit. Yeah. And I love street spirit into talk show host because it just feels like it should be that.
[00:29:27] - [Speaker 1]
That's good.
[00:29:28] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And then into Sail to the Moon, which is just sort of has this sort of ambient etherealness. And then my turn song had disappeared completely.
[00:29:37] - [Speaker 1]
Jeez. Okay.
[00:29:38] - [Speaker 0]
So like the first side, if you're not, like, depressed
[00:29:41] - [Speaker 1]
I know. Like I'm I'm feeling winter as well for you. Yeah. You're you're I I've got splashes of summer. You've got a
[00:29:48] - [Speaker 0]
you're full winter. Rockers. I'm just all like sad, dad. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:29:52] - [Speaker 0]
Then we come back, we turn it over, and then open up Paranoid Android. Yeah. How did you not have Paranoid Android?
[00:29:58] - [Speaker 1]
Look. I mean, it was there, but it seems an obvious choice to me.
[00:30:04] - [Speaker 0]
It has to be there.
[00:30:05] - [Speaker 1]
I just don't know what I knock out for it.
[00:30:07] - [Speaker 0]
I know. That's the But also, I think it kind of I think it suffers from the same kind of element of like Sgt. Pepper's side. Like, there's songs on that that you, you know, if if you listen to it for the first time, you're like, oh my god, that's amazing. But you've heard those songs a thousand times, and so you kinda just don't think about it.
[00:30:25] - [Speaker 1]
You kinda get four songs in one with Paranoid and Paranoid as well.
[00:30:28] - [Speaker 0]
That's right. And I think it's a good opener on the sector. Yeah. Then into Knives Out.
[00:30:32] - [Speaker 1]
Okay. Yeah.
[00:30:33] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. So that one, I like that one, I had in that slot. I had Karma Police or Knives Out. Oh, jeez. I know.
[00:30:41] - [Speaker 0]
I know. Controversial. That is controversial. Next one, our only other than yeah. I think it's actually our only In Rainbows selection, which is really weird because I love that album.
[00:30:53] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:30:53] - [Speaker 0]
But I have all I need. Okay. But you had no In Rainbows. I had no Rainbows. I had no other In
[00:30:59] - [Speaker 1]
In Rainbows was probably for me if there worst be a period where I dipped down on Radiohead. Oh, really? And I think it was probably just more life circumstances.
[00:31:07] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Okay.
[00:31:08] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. And the whole kind of remember, you know, sort of giving it away. For free. Yeah. Okay.
[00:31:12] - [Speaker 0]
I love that. Yeah. I think I was when was that? Was that 2007?
[00:31:16] - [Speaker 1]
'7. Yeah. 2007.
[00:31:17] - [Speaker 0]
I had finished uni. Oh, no. So I was I was working by then. But I you know, free is the best price for me.
[00:31:22] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:31:23] - [Speaker 0]
Anyway, I there's a lot of songs on that album I do love, but I was surprised that they didn't get I mean, we're talking about the absolute stratosphere of songs. Right? Yeah. Yeah. That's a good that's a
[00:31:34] - [Speaker 1]
good call.
[00:31:34] - [Speaker 0]
Then I go to Fake Plastic Trees Yeah. Which is great. Gotta be there. Then I go to exit music, but on my finisher. Yeah.
[00:31:41] - [Speaker 0]
And this is my cheat.
[00:31:42] - [Speaker 1]
It's a
[00:31:43] - [Speaker 0]
huge cheat, and you're gonna hate it. Yeah. Have Creep, but I do not have Pablo Honey version of Creep. I have the very 2021 remix.
[00:31:53] - [Speaker 1]
Yes. Which you made me listen to.
[00:31:56] - [Speaker 0]
Which I made you listen to. Yeah. Technically, that's by Tom York, but it says creep featuring Radiohead. Interesting. Therefore, I feel I should get away
[00:32:06] - [Speaker 1]
with it. Do you know I feel not to not to at all mess with the integrity of your your 12? That's got a hidden track feel about it to me. Oh, yeah. The days where in the CD world that you'd have ten minutes of silence, you'd fall asleep, and then this bloody song would start.
[00:32:23] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. That's got hidden track vibes.
[00:32:25] - [Speaker 0]
Oh, that's cool. But that you know what's even cool Yeah. About I get an extra song.
[00:32:29] - [Speaker 1]
Exactly. I I don't wanna compromise.
[00:32:31] - [Speaker 0]
And if I do get an extra song, and we we could both have Creep twenty twenty one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because if you haven't listened to it and you like Radiohead Yeah.
[00:32:38] - [Speaker 0]
Like, you have to listen to it.
[00:32:40] - [Speaker 1]
It's it's interesting. Yeah.
[00:32:41] - [Speaker 0]
It's slowed down. Yeah. I think it's maybe even half Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:32:44] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Speed. Yeah. And it's got these, like, huge drone sounds that kick in. The three and a half minute mark Yeah.
[00:32:51] - [Speaker 0]
If you're not, like, completely, you know, in a happy place, I don't know what's wrong with you. Okay. So that can be our secret track. So this is just us cheating for you. So you get one more, and you can put it anywhere.
[00:33:04] - [Speaker 0]
I get one more. I'll go with mine. I'm gonna do what you did. Yeah. But I'm gonna have Karma Police as
[00:33:10] - [Speaker 1]
the close-up. Nice. In the
[00:33:13] - [Speaker 0]
spirit of the concert that we will hopefully get
[00:33:16] - [Speaker 1]
to you. Nice. And if I was to get another one, and I know I I didn't use creep as my hidden track, but just on your in rainbows, I feel bad now for in rainbows. So I think I'll go with weird fishes.
[00:33:28] - [Speaker 0]
Ah, yeah. Yeah.
[00:33:31] - [Speaker 1]
But, yeah, I mean, you know, oh, look. This is a bit of a hack for our top 12 now. Right? The old hidden track.
[00:33:37] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Yeah. I'm gonna be using that. Alright. Well, we've rounded that out.
[00:33:42] - [Speaker 0]
I think it's time to put on our armor and shield and get into a top five battle. What do you think?
[00:33:48] - [Speaker 1]
I think so. Cool. I think so.
[00:34:07] - [Speaker 0]
And we're back. So now we have our first top five battle. So rules are very simple. We'll take it in turns from five to one. The topic for today is the top five b sides of all time.
[00:34:24] - [Speaker 0]
For those aren't familiar b sides then, you know, when singles were released back in the day when things were physical media, you'd have the main single up front and then you'd flip it over or on the CD, it'd be the second track and it'd be the b side. And often it's, you know, a live version of a song or it might be a couple of other things or it might be a song that they didn't think was good enough to go on the album. Mhmm. And as we're gonna find out, there are some absolutely cracking b sides, some of which I think better than the a sides 100%. That were that were there.
[00:35:00] - [Speaker 0]
So we'll take it in turns, and then at the end, we'll decide objectively who is the winner. There's obviously no stakes, so I don't know why we're doing that.
[00:35:13] - [Speaker 1]
We're just gonna do that. Because I can declare myself the winner already, but my favorite guy.
[00:35:19] - [Speaker 0]
And this is unfair because you are gonna be the winner because you love this stuff. Alright. That's fine. Let's get started. What's your number five?
[00:35:27] - [Speaker 0]
Alrighty.
[00:35:28] - [Speaker 1]
Look. I've got a top five. I'm gonna work in some honorable mentions here.
[00:35:34] - [Speaker 0]
You could do honorable mentions at the end. Yeah. Because otherwise, then if they get picked up in mine. It's gotta be five True.
[00:35:40] - [Speaker 1]
And then
[00:35:40] - [Speaker 0]
five four four.
[00:35:41] - [Speaker 1]
I'll start with something we've already canvassed. Mhmm. That was in my top 12 Radiohead tracks. Mhmm. So it's gotta be there.
[00:35:49] - [Speaker 1]
It's gotta be there. Number five talk show host. Oh. It's there. I think it's up there with one of one of the great b sides.
[00:35:56] - [Speaker 1]
Mhmm. One of the head scratches as to why it wasn't on an album. I think I know why it wasn't. You know, there's a bit of movie soundtrack stuff going on
[00:36:03] - [Speaker 0]
as well. That's right. But Romeo and Juliet was
[00:36:06] - [Speaker 1]
Romeo and Juliet,
[00:36:07] - [Speaker 0]
I think. Yeah. I think there's a bit of a theme. There's a couple of others of mine, which were b sides, but they were made for, like, a soundtrack.
[00:36:13] - [Speaker 1]
That's right. Yeah. Yeah. So they've kinda got that dual purpose. Right?
[00:36:17] - [Speaker 1]
So you Yeah. You know, But talk show host.
[00:36:19] - [Speaker 0]
Talk show host. Yeah. Okay. I won't spoil it, but I will I will just not spoil it. How about that?
[00:36:25] - [Speaker 0]
Okay. My number five is Starla by Smashing Pumpkins. So this was b side to I'm the one, which is I'm one, sorry, which is the I think it was their lead single off Gish. Yeah. And it is definitely of the Gish era.
[00:36:43] - [Speaker 0]
Eleven minute song starts out with, like, a low acoustic kind of vibe and builds out. And then the I'm gonna be, like, very hesitant on how many times I say face melting solo on this podcast, but this was a face melting solo. Yeah. A full fuzz and, you know, we both love guitar. We'll be talking about guitars and tones and, you know, gear at some point, you know, as part of this in addition to our obvious wonderful guitar work in middle.
[00:37:13] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Oh, yeah. But this is if you like fuzz sound and a solo, and it's that smashing pumpkin sound Yeah.
[00:37:19] - [Speaker 1]
It's
[00:37:19] - [Speaker 0]
amazing. Yeah. It's on Pisces, the their b side album. Yep. And it is just epic.
[00:37:28] - [Speaker 1]
Epic. That's my number five. Nice. Nice. Okay.
[00:37:32] - [Speaker 1]
I'm gonna go my second. Number four on my list. Yeah. The Master Plan Oasis.
[00:37:43] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. That's lower than I thought it would be for you.
[00:37:46] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah. Look, the master plan look, it's it's it's that purple patch. Every song Noel Gallagher wrote from about '94 through to '96 was just, you know So good. The quality of some of those b sides.
[00:38:02] - [Speaker 1]
I think we're talking the other the other week just around, you know, what was it? Four maybe Yeah. B sides were in the live 25 set list. Yep. And they were meant to be there.
[00:38:12] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. They were. You wouldn't have even noticed.
[00:38:14] - [Speaker 1]
No. And there would have been an uproar if they weren't.
[00:38:17] - [Speaker 0]
And it wasn't even like then this is we were talking about. It wasn't like fan servitude either. No. Like that would be generally one of the top ones.
[00:38:24] - [Speaker 1]
And it wasn't, yeah, it wasn't like kind of, you know, this is our latest single and here's the b side. It wasn't from a certain era. It they just had to be there. They had to be. Forced their way onto it.
[00:38:34] - [Speaker 0]
Here's the thing. This will also shorten our podcast, which I'm sure our listeners will love. That's my number four as well. Is it really? Yeah.
[00:38:41] - [Speaker 0]
Is it How weird is that? I thought you were gonna be high, and I thought you were gonna absolutely thrash me
[00:38:45] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:38:45] - [Speaker 0]
By having it at number four. Yeah. No. Look. But is this the last of Oasis that we'll hear from?
[00:38:50] - [Speaker 0]
It's
[00:38:50] - [Speaker 1]
not. It's not. It's think know. It's not. It's not.
[00:38:54] - [Speaker 0]
But that's cool. Okay. So well, then that's my number four. Same reasons as you. Love it.
[00:38:59] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. It's just such
[00:39:00] - [Speaker 1]
a complete song. I did hear an anecdote that of all the b sides during that era, Liam said to Noel, what are you doing? That should be on the third album. Yeah. Wow.
[00:39:13] - [Speaker 1]
And Noel was basically like, there's more of these.
[00:39:16] - [Speaker 0]
Don't worry. Yes. Yes.
[00:39:18] - [Speaker 1]
And was there? You know, Be Here Now is
[00:39:20] - [Speaker 0]
a great album. Yeah. But that could've benefited from like 100%. Yeah. I've always been surprised by that with the master plan, like, when they released that b sides album because part of it was like because I wasn't that big of an Oasis fan, but I remember saying to my husband, was like, oh, yeah.
[00:39:34] - [Speaker 0]
It's a cool album. Yeah. It's like, yeah, those are all released before.
[00:39:39] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Anyway, okay. Number three. Number three for me is a track called Broken by Teenage Fan Club. Mhmm.
[00:39:47] - [Speaker 1]
Big band for me, Teenage Fan Club. Broken is essentially got about five or six words in it. My heart has been broken again. It's been broken. That just repeat, repeat, repeat.
[00:40:01] - [Speaker 1]
And it's one of the most sublime beautiful tracks of teenage fan clubs. And I can see why it's a b side Mhmm. In terms of the album release around it, which is songs from Northern Britain. But it's an amazing song, and I was really lucky enough. In the early two thousands, they played a series of shows in Camden and London where they did sort of acoustic, no instrument no guitars, and then guitars.
[00:40:31] - [Speaker 1]
And I went to all three nights, and on the acoustic night, they finished with this song. And, you know, only about was at the the underworld in Camden, so maybe about six or 700 people. And the refrain of this song was just sung by the crowd for about a minute. That's cool. It's a really great song.
[00:40:54] - [Speaker 1]
It's a it's a bit of a niche one.
[00:40:56] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. I honestly haven't heard that or really much of the band.
[00:41:00] - [Speaker 1]
Teenage Train Club. Absolutely brilliant.
[00:41:02] - [Speaker 0]
Okay. My number three is and this is one of those ones that shocked me that it was actually a b side. But in doing some research, when I was looking at b sides, I was like, how is that a b side? Because it's actually one of my favorite Smith songs, is How Soon Is Now. Yep.
[00:41:17] - [Speaker 0]
On the other side of William, it was Not Really Nothing, which I actually really love that song too. Yep. But I always thought it was, like, a single. And then when I went back and looked at the albums afterwards, I was I was shocked. And I guess my ad my little ad thing to to to that is if you're looking for a Smith's album to pick up, Hat Full of Horror Hollow.
[00:41:45] - [Speaker 0]
Mhmm. There's it's it's they're just all different kind of cuts and and different session pieces. But I think that their version also of this charming man, which is from the John Peel sessions in 1983 Yep. Is a better version than the single version. Anyway, that's a bit of an aside because it actually has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.
[00:42:05] - [Speaker 0]
But I just wanted to talk about that because I know people love all the original albums and all the rest of it. But Yeah. Half of Horror Hollow was so good, and I'm really glad I bought that album. Anyway, the 12 inch version is the version I'm picking Yeah. Of how soon is now because they did release it as a a side later on.
[00:42:27] - [Speaker 1]
They did, didn't they?
[00:42:28] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. So the 12 inch version is what I've got, and it's on Hat Full of Hollow, and I love it. That's my number three.
[00:42:33] - [Speaker 1]
That's a great that's a great call. And with our age difference, I actually thought of of putting please please please Oh, yeah. On mine. But I didn't know you're a big Smiths man, so I wasn't sure. I just thought it might be a bit of an older reference.
[00:42:49] - [Speaker 1]
But for me Smiths is great. And I I think that might be on the same single,
[00:42:54] - [Speaker 0]
as a
[00:42:54] - [Speaker 1]
b side
[00:42:55] - [Speaker 0]
I think it was.
[00:42:55] - [Speaker 1]
With William. Quick thing from me on how soon is now, when it got released as an a side, I have got a really clear childhood memory where my dad, so back in the day in the mid eighties, we had a VCR and he used to stay up stay up quite late and he used to tape some things off the off the TV. And I remember him sitting my brother and I down and saying, watch this. And it was he had he had video he had taken a recording of How Soon Is Now by the Smiths. So that's like eight year old me.
[00:43:30] - [Speaker 1]
Johnny Ma And the tremolo effect. Why do you think it was a b side originally? Because I mean
[00:43:35] - [Speaker 0]
it I think maybe because it was so weird with that tremolo effect.
[00:43:38] - [Speaker 1]
I think so.
[00:43:39] - [Speaker 0]
It was quite Yeah. I mean, it's it's it is the most iconic use of tremolo, I think.
[00:43:45] - [Speaker 1]
Well, you just if you if you're doing any tremolo like that, it's a pastiche on that.
[00:43:49] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Yeah. Well, pretty much since then. I don't know. Because and maybe it was a long song.
[00:43:54] - [Speaker 0]
I don't know.
[00:43:55] - [Speaker 1]
How soon is now?
[00:43:56] - [Speaker 0]
It's great. So good. Great. Alright. Yeah.
[00:43:57] - [Speaker 0]
What's, what are you up to?
[00:43:58] - [Speaker 1]
Number two. Number two. Okay. So Room 512, all the news that's fits fit to print by The Wonder Stuff for me. It's, The Wonder Stuff are a great b side band, particularly in their sort of the last era of their first incarnation.
[00:44:16] - [Speaker 1]
This is a beautiful little acoustic number. It actually appeared on a on a documentary about the band during their third album cycle, Never Love Delvis. So I I had locked it in
[00:44:28] - [Speaker 0]
That's great title.
[00:44:29] - [Speaker 1]
As being on the as being on the fourth album. It appeared as a b side, which has always been a surprise to me. Big fan favorite. Mhmm. It was written in New York City.
[00:44:39] - [Speaker 1]
It was one of those songs that history suggests, from Miles Hunt, the songwriter, that is pretty much written, you know, on the spot. And as you do when you're a pretty big band in the early nineties, he had a had a recording, you know, crew with them doing the, things. So they came over to his hotel room, which was Room 512 of the Empire City Hotel in New York. All the news that's fit to print is the byline of the New York Times as well. It's just a great song.
[00:45:07] - [Speaker 1]
It's just a it's just a singer songwriter moment of And I could see, you know, you know, it probably didn't have I think it would definitely go on an album now, but in that kind of early nineties kind of when you're becoming a big band, you know, it probably didn't have that sort of here, but a sublime track.
[00:45:27] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Nice. My number two, and this is a throwback to your earlier comment about your hatred of noodling basslines. It's Soldier Squeeze by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Oh.
[00:45:39] - [Speaker 0]
Which was a b side to Under the Bridge. And I I mean, Under the Bridge, you can't, like I'm never gonna say that Soldier Squeeze is better, but Soldier Squeeze is one of my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. Like, it's really chilled out, but I feel like it's all of them working in the best way that they can, including the noodly bass lines, including the little there's like this really good bit. Chad does his cymbal splash and like, and then Flea comes in. He's like, It's so good.
[00:46:14] - [Speaker 0]
It's just I don't know. I think kinda like road tripping. I really like that, the chilled out bit funk vibe Yeah. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Okay.
[00:46:24] - [Speaker 0]
I like the fun kind of energetic stuff too, but, yeah, it's a it's a it's a great song. I don't know why it's a b side. I would have had that, on an album for sure.
[00:46:33] - [Speaker 1]
I'll have a listen. Red Hot Chili Peppers, they'll probably come up a bit for me. I've just never got across the line with those characters, and I even read the key to scar tissue.
[00:46:44] - [Speaker 0]
Oh, yeah. That's a great book. It's a great book. Could We should do a we should do a segment on, like, best music books too.
[00:46:50] - [Speaker 1]
It's a
[00:46:50] - [Speaker 0]
great book.
[00:46:51] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. I I hope that gets made into a film. Oh, that'd be cool. Yeah. Look.
[00:46:55] - [Speaker 1]
LA in the eighties.
[00:46:56] - [Speaker 0]
Right? It's got such a thing yeah. Like
[00:46:59] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Okay. Good shout. Your top one. Okay.
[00:47:02] - [Speaker 1]
Top one. You gotta give me some indulgence here. Alright? I'm gonna just name check before I get to what my number one is a couple of other mentions. Right?
[00:47:12] - [Speaker 1]
Because I just I just think I just think that the world does not stop and think about those Noel Gallagher pen b sides in the mid nineties enough. Mhmm. I spent a lot of time thinking about them, let alone listening to them. So before I get to my my number one, I'd just like to give a shout out to Listen Up, Fade Away, Half the World Away
[00:47:36] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah.
[00:47:36] - [Speaker 1]
Rockin' Chair, Let's All Make Believe, which is a great b side of Go Let It Out. Oh, okay. Idler's Dream, Aqueous. Aqueous.
[00:47:46] - [Speaker 0]
I thought that was gonna be another one.
[00:47:48] - [Speaker 1]
Well, look, Aqueous was gonna be there, but the one I have to go for because I think it was one of the moments where I thought, who is this songwriter? Yeah. Bringing in that other side to that band Oasis, which seemed all a bit brashy and bold. So I've gone with Talk Tonight. Ah, cool.
[00:48:07] - [Speaker 1]
Just a just a great track. My my daughter my daughter loves Talk Tonight, it was one of the things that got her massively across line with Oasis, but it's just a great
[00:48:16] - [Speaker 0]
It is. Track. Yeah.
[00:48:18] - [Speaker 1]
But I had to give honorable mentions to that list
[00:48:20] - [Speaker 0]
No. That's
[00:48:20] - [Speaker 1]
fair. Yeah.
[00:48:21] - [Speaker 0]
I mean, like, I thought you were gonna go acquiesce,
[00:48:23] - [Speaker 1]
but actually,
[00:48:24] - [Speaker 0]
I think you've made a better call with Talk Tonight for sure, for that reason.
[00:48:27] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:48:28] - [Speaker 0]
Well, my one is not exactly like this is a bit of a bit of a letdown because you've already it was your number five, which is Talk Show Host. Yeah. I love it. Yeah. I love it.
[00:48:38] - [Speaker 0]
I love it because I also love playing it on guitar. Yeah. And it's weird because it's a very simple play on the guitar. Yeah. But then if you can add a little bit of reverb, a little of distortion Yeah.
[00:48:51] - [Speaker 0]
It's it's weird. Like, it just as soon as you hit the bong, it just Yeah. It's like it's Yeah. I don't know. They must have just I reckon they were, like, just noodling around on the guitar.
[00:49:03] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. They've hit that and gone, what
[00:49:04] - [Speaker 1]
was that? Yeah. Yeah.
[00:49:06] - [Speaker 0]
It's just so cool. And then the the fact that they got, like, the trip hop kind
[00:49:10] - [Speaker 1]
of Yeah.
[00:49:11] - [Speaker 0]
It it definitely is of its time.
[00:49:12] - [Speaker 1]
Do you know the Nelly Hooper remix? No. Yeah. There's a Nelly Hooper remix, which is a good version as well. Okay.
[00:49:19] - [Speaker 1]
Nice look at that. But I agree that sort of drum. And what amazes me with something like that that song is the restraint as well. Yes. You know?
[00:49:28] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Yeah. And it's it's got a real mood, which that's it also, I would say, and probably why it took number one spot for me is it's a b side Yeah. That is genuinely the best b side because of how it relates to its a side. Yeah.
[00:49:45] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And, you know, there's a bit of a theme in this, you know, because I did have a street spirit into talk show host in my 12. Yeah. They speak to each other. Yeah.
[00:49:56] - [Speaker 0]
They do. They do. We could probably do at some point another segment about songs that are, like, almost they feel the same Yeah. But they're not. Yeah.
[00:50:07] - [Speaker 0]
And they're across different albums. The other one like that that gets me the same vibe as Street Spirit and Talk Show Host is in Smashing Pumpkins, which is my one that you're gonna hear about all the time. Yeah. Is 1979, obviously, off Melancholy and Perfect off Haverador. Yeah.
[00:50:25] - [Speaker 0]
And if you listen to the two, they could be kinda like almost like song song siblings. Yeah. And Yeah. That's my feel for Street Spirit and talk shows.
[00:50:34] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:50:35] - [Speaker 0]
And I love them both because also they were so not Ben's Yeah. Tracks. Yeah. And I think if you listen to that, you could see where they're gonna go.
[00:50:46] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. Yeah. Totally. Like, I think, you know, some of the best b sides for me have been in late singles from one album cycle that kind of hint at you hint at the future direction. Right?
[00:50:58] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah. And you you can kind of see that in many of these bands, but you're right. Just, you know, when you
[00:51:03] - [Speaker 0]
think
[00:51:03] - [Speaker 1]
about you know, it's one of the great things of the CD single era. You know, they're coming up with three extra tracks. And and in The UK often, you'd have a CD one and a CD two. So in an album cycle, it was not unusual for bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Suede, all of those bands to give you three to five new tracks per single release, of which there were four. Mhmm.
[00:51:29] - [Speaker 1]
So you're getting a whole album during the song.
[00:51:32] - [Speaker 0]
But like what you were saying about Master Plan, though, the other thing is kind of like, you wonder what process they go through in editing to determine what goes on and what doesn't go on. Yeah. Because there's like some songs within those top five Yeah. Where I could absolutely find a spot for it because there are some dogs on some of the other ones.
[00:51:49] - [Speaker 1]
And it's like, how
[00:51:50] - [Speaker 0]
did you not think that that was the best song?
[00:51:52] - [Speaker 1]
I don't know. I don't know. You know, you just you just sort of think so many considerations come in. Mhmm. And, you know, one of the things, you know, in The UK, certainly in the early nineties, the single sales were a big thing.
[00:52:03] - [Speaker 1]
Mhmm. That's Sometimes there was a strategic
[00:52:06] - [Speaker 0]
Oh, yeah. To try and, like, really, like, And I know Well, they're kind of sort of like what's a single into an EP. Right? Yeah.
[00:52:12] - [Speaker 1]
That's right.
[00:52:13] - [Speaker 0]
Some point That's right. You can almost get an extra release.
[00:52:15] - [Speaker 1]
And, you know, on the Noel Gallagher side of things, you know, massive Johnny Marr Morrissey, Paul Weller Jam fan. Mhmm. And you know, as we've talked about, you know, those bands in particular, you know, they had b side heritage. Mhmm. And yeah, I could talk about this for ages, you know, existentially about around how, you know, was it a good thing to have all those oasis b sides as b sides?
[00:52:41] - [Speaker 1]
And I think in a way it was. It built the myth Yeah. The mythology Yeah. Of it all.
[00:52:45] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. And I think it just shows like how prolific they were as well and Yeah. And how much
[00:52:50] - [Speaker 1]
Yeah.
[00:52:50] - [Speaker 0]
How much more to than it was than just sort of bash it out rock and roll. Like, they were very musical.
[00:52:56] - [Speaker 1]
Can I give a couple of quick late shout outs because, you know Of course? Ignore at me if I can't. You know, I feel like I just need to say some stuff out loud. So I just like to shout out Suede. Oh, yeah.
[00:53:08] - [Speaker 1]
They're a they're a they're an amazing b side band and couple there, My Insatiable One and Killing of a Flash Boy. Mhmm. But, you know, one that we a biggie that we haven't talked about, which people don't sort of think of these songs as b sides, but I'm the walrus in Strawberry
[00:53:24] - [Speaker 0]
Fields. That's right. B sides and eels. Ton of them. But rain rain is another good one.
[00:53:29] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah.
[00:53:29] - [Speaker 1]
Were they double a sides or b sides?
[00:53:31] - [Speaker 0]
Who knows? The thing, and I think I mean, we're gonna get to the Beatles in many, many ways. And one of those is gonna be when we start talking about I think we'll have to do a deep dive on, like, run of albums Yeah. In a row. We'll talk about that one.
[00:53:46] - [Speaker 0]
Like, what's the best kind of three albums in a row? Yeah. And then when we're thinking about that as a as a potential kind of, like, segment or question, we're like, oh, Beatles. Actually, it's like they've got high five. Yeah.
[00:53:59] - [Speaker 0]
But that run, you think it you you think the amount of music, like, talking about that prolific thing. I mean, obviously, they stopped touring, so they're able to record so much more. But even to your point, even in the earlier years Yeah. There's stuff that's Yeah. That that would be so Extraordinary.
[00:54:13] - [Speaker 0]
Yeah. Can't wait to get into that. Alright. Well, we have no doubt blown through all thoughts of a reasonable time length for this. I feel like if you're still listening, then Thank you.
[00:54:25] - [Speaker 0]
Thank you. Thank you. But also, like us, you just love a chat. Yeah. So, yeah, we're we'll we'll keep doing this because we wanna do it because it's fun.
[00:54:39] - [Speaker 0]
But, yeah, give us feedback. We'll we'll try and set up a little website and get some of these playlists and different things on there. And, if there's other things or features or you wanna come on and have a chat, we'll always welcome that. We're hopeful as we kinda get get speed, we'll, you know, we could do some interviews. We could do other stuff.
[00:54:57] - [Speaker 0]
So this is really just about talking like a like a book club, but, you know, with music and kind of interesting factoids and things that we like. So, yeah. Anyway, thanks, Matt. Nice one, Ash. Alright.
[00:55:10] - [Speaker 0]
We'll talk to you next time. Bye. See you.
